Here’s everything you need to know about what the payment is, who can get it, and how it works.
What is a Cold Weather Payment?
A Cold Weather Payment is a government scheme designed to help with heating costs during very cold weather. It’s made automatically when the average temperature in your area is recorded or forecast to be zero degrees Celsius or below for seven days in a row.
Each payment is £25 for every seven-day period for very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible for Cold Weather Payments if you receive certain benefits, such as:
- Pension credits
- Income support
- Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
You don’t need to apply – if you qualify, payments will be made automatically.
Do I need to do anything?
Most people don’t need to take any action.
If you get Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), you will need to tell Jobcentre Plus if you:
- Have had a baby
- A child under 5 has come to live with you
You will not automatically receive the Cold Weather Payment if you don’t.
When will I be paid?
Payments are made automatically to your bank or building society account within 14 working days of each period of cold weather.
If you think you qualify but haven’t received a payment, contact the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus for advice.
